Test Successes

Congratulations to the following BISC members who passed NISA synchro tests at Basingstoke on December 7:

Charlotte Brook, Jordan Brown, Paul Dredge and Olivia Wessendorff —novice and prelim;
Kirsty Clarkson, Alex Smith and Kirsten Smith — novice, prelim and bronze;
Rebecca Fraser, Laura Hartley, Rachel Heap and Alison Ryder — bronze.

Dance Club

Due to a Bees’ cup match, the start of the monthly Wednesday dance club has had to be postponed until February 16. The 9.15-10.30pm session will feature compulsory dance music and skaters — solo and couples — will be able to join in any dances they know. Skaters probably also will be able to “buy” dances with a dance coach who will be available throughout the session. The dance club will be open to skaters from other rinks who can either join BISC or pay a guest fee in addition to the £4 cost of ice. Further sessions will be held on the third Wednesday of the month.

While it is envisaged that - due to the lateness - the session will appeal mostly to adults, all BISC members will be welcome providing they are proficient at the dances.

200 Club

The 200 Club December draw (double normal prize money) was won by Sarah Johnson (£62) and Pat and Paul Watson (£16). Those people who bought shares at the start of 2004 now need to renew their subscription. They can do so at the club table, by downloading a form from the BISC website or by seeing Karen Dredge who has taken over running the 200 Club from Scott Waller. Anyone who doesn’t already have a share, or who would like additional shares for themselves, their family or friends, should also buy them now, ready for the January draw.

Camp Dates

The Academy is to run two camps this year. The first is during the Easter holiday, from April 4-8, the second during the summer holiday, from August 1-5. Details about levels and disciplines will be made known later but there is expected to be onice from 8-10.30am each day followed by off-ice until noon.

Synchro Raffle

The club’s synchro section is delighted with the success of its Christmas raffle which raised £619. “Please say thank you to everyone who donated prizes or bought tickets. Their support was very much appreciated,” said Carol Briddon who helped organise the fundraiser. First prize of £100 was won by a Mrs Carpenter who donated her money to synchro, while James King won the Microsoft Publisher software. There were 17 other prize winners.

Videos & Photos

Copies of the Cinderella On Ice video are available at £12. Please order from the club table or by email from Sue Truby - sue@truby58.fsnet.co. uk. Cheques should be payable to Bracknell Ice Skating Club. Photos from the pantomime are also available — view and order at rinkside on Tuesdays, and don’t forget you can order prints or CDs of club competition presentation photos.

Help For Skaters

BISC has set up a sub-committee to look at the possibility of providing subsidised off-ice sessions to help members to improve their skating. Ideas include weekly sessions with trained instructors in ballet and pilates as well as fitness and stamina.

Ouch

The club wishes speedy recoveries to Charlotte Hester who has two broken bones in her hand, and to Anna Minchinton and David Truby who needed stitches in leg injuries.

Videos & DVDs

The club’s collection of ISU videos and DVDs, designed to help skaters to improve their elements, is proving very popular.

For a £5 deposit for each video or DVD, they can be borrowed free of charge for a week from the club table on Wednesdays although there may be a waiting list.

The titles are: How to Spin; How to Jump – axel, salchow, and loop; How to Jump – flip, toe loop, lutz; and Pairs. Each has sections about each jump/spin including history, technique, errors, corrections and skaters comments.

Have you paid?

Don't forget that anyone who skates on club ice on Wednesdays must pay at reception for each part of the session they skate on-ie, 6.15-6.45pm, 6.45-7.30pm and 7.30-8pm.

Tickets must be handed to the duty committee member at the gate before going on the ice at the start of each session.

Copies of BISC News with colour photographs are now available, priced £1. Members can still get black and white copies free as part of their membership.
