Watch and Learn
The club now has a collection of ISU videos and DVDs designed to help skaters to improve their elements.
All the items can be borrowed free of charge for a week but members will have to leave a £5 deposit for each video or DVD they borrow from the club table, and there maybe a waiting list.
The titles are: How to Spin; How to Jump – axel, salchow, and loop; How to Jump – flip, toe loop, lutz; and Pairs. Each has sections about each jump/spin including history, technique, errors, corrections and skaters comments. They follow each element through from the basics to the more advanced stages.
Photo Permissions
We must have the consent of parents or guardians in order to publish photos on the BISC website of club members who are aged under 16.
Consent forms are available at the club table on Wednesdays or by asking a committee member. Would members who skate with a partner or as part of a group or team please ensure that the other skaters also give their consent.
Synchro Images
Photos taken of BISC’s junior synchro team Ice Metrics in 2000 are to go on show at a Reading art gallery.
They were taken by Donna-Maria Jones, who was then a photography student. She has told us that “some of the photos turned out quite well and I would like to inform you that the images will be showing through March at the Jelly Leg'd Chicken arts gallery in Reading.”
Mast Misery
If you stop at the petrol station at the top of John Nike Way and find that your car won’t start again … radiation from nearby masts might be to blame! Someone from Cardigan who wrote to the Daily Mail, found that, after filling her car with petrol, it wouldn’t start even though the lights and radio worked and the battery was OK. According to two mechanics who helped her push the car from the pumps to the parking area, this happens a lot. It is believed to occur when cars are left with their bonnets beyond the canopy … putting the engine in line with the garage aerial and the big mast down the road. It seems radiation from the masts triggers car immobilisers. The car start-ed without a problem once it had been moved.
Have you paid?
Don't forget that anyone who skates on club ice on Wednesdays must pay at reception for each part of the session they skate on-ie, 6.15-6.45pm, 6.45-7.30pm and 7.30-8pm.
Tickets must be handed to the duty committee member at the gate before going on the ice at the start of each session.
Copies of BISC News with colour photographs are now available, priced £1. Members can still get black and white copies free as part of their membership.
