National Team Challenge Report

Bracknell once again hosted the National Team Challenge this year but unfortunately wasn’t able to repeat its success of last year, when the team won silver overall. The team challenge format requires clubs to select 8 classes from 14 in which to compete and these cover free skating, dance, synchronised skating and artistic classes. Each club must compete in the show number for up to 30 skaters at the end. The ‘ideal’ is to win in classes which have a full complement of skaters, to maximise points at the expense of other clubs but this is difficult as no-one knows before-hand which teams will contest which classes. Bracknell’s first entry was Amy Barnes in the level 3 and under girls’ class but in a close contest Amy was placed 6th, winning 1 point for the club. Next to skate should have been Jordan Brown but an unfortunate last minute injury forced him to withdraw. Unfortunately his reserve had not turned up and so Hannah Hetebrij stepped into the breach at the last minute, skating in the level 5 and under girls’ class. She skated well, but it was difficult to skate unprepared and she placed 4th of 4 collecting 3 points. David Truby collected 5 points by coming 2nd of 2 in the boys level 7 and under class. A couple of good performances by Bracknell’s solo dancers added to the points, with Charlotte Hester coming 2nd of 4 in the under level 7 CD dancing the Rocker Foxtrot and Carly Emery placing 2nd of 3 in the level 8 and under Free dance class, to add another 10 points between them. Bracknell did not enter either of the couples dance categories where it has always done well in the past but did not have competitors of the right levels this year. Bracknell’s synchro development team came 2nd of 2 to score another 5 points. Skating for the Fusion team were Captains - Kristiana Hadley and Amy McAree, Charlotte Bush, Sofia Sallons, Olivia Bates, Tanis Davies, Aleksandra Baidakava, Megan Ridout and Daisy Washington, with reserve Sian Davies. Bracknell also entered the artistic classes with Olivia Clarke in the solo exhibition for level 8 and under - as Olivia is only level 3 she did well skating her Choo-choo chaboogie number but was only placed 4th of 4, earning 3 points. The final class entered was the any standard 2s, 3s and 4s, contested by Bethany Jarvis and Seren Tudor with their self-choreographed programme to Rossini’s Cats’ Duet. This class was won by the British Junior Dance champions Leigh Rogers and Lloyd Jones who together with Jono Partridge, the 2005 primary men’s bronze medallist, skated to an Austin Powers number. Seren and Bethany placed 3rd, beating the very funny Scooby Doo number from Guildford that had placed above them in the ‘inter-club’ artistic competition. Despite several medals, Bracknell was languishing in last place and hoped to do well in the show number, skating to music from Fame with a wonderful New York taxi made by Paul Minchinton and family. From upstairs in block 1 it looked fantastic and all credit to the skaters who pulled off the choreography brilliantly. Sadly the judges did not agree - possibly it did not look so effective from their viewpoint at rinkside and whilst 1 judge had placed them first, they ended up 6th overall. This was very disappointing after all the hard work put in by the skaters themselves, by Jane Jordan who co-ordinated the costumes and Stacey’s excellent choreography. Many of the audience agreed it deserved better. There will be another chance to see what is an excellent show number during the gala in September. Skating in the show number were: Michelle Bannister, Carly Emery, Rebecca Forsyth, Chris Kerr, Leah Rogers, in the lead roles, with James Bailey, Elinor Bowes, Anastasia Brenikov, Jordan Brown, Hannah Connor, Laura Connor, Olivia Clarke, Rachel Connelly, Emily Farrow, Laura Hartley, Charlotte Hester, Hannah Hetebrij, Amber-Jayne Holmes, Holly Jordan, Emily Kellas, Rachel Kellas, Laura Ingram, Bethany Jarvis, Christina Keating, Anna Minchinton, ClaireMinchinton, Sadie Robbins, Cara Rogers, David Truby, and Seren Tudor, with reserves Zoe McBride, Amy Barnes, Olivia Dick and Paul Dredge Results overall:1st Chelmsford (50 points), 2nd.Guildford (41 points), 3rd Isle of Wight (also 41 points but below Guildford in the show number), 4th Montem (40), 5th Alexandra Palace(39), 6th Bracknell(32)

Competitive Fun at Bracknell Adult Opens

A total of 12 adult skaters competed for Bracknell in this years Bracknell Adult Open. The competition was organised by Sue Truby with her usual efficiency and apart from a few minor problems with competitor’s music due to a ‘missing’ cassette player and some technical problems with the recordings, it ran very smoothly and many skaters commented once again on the friendly and supportive atmosphere. For many adults, it is not just a competition but a chance to meet up again with friends from rinks around the country. Thanks go to the many volunteer helpers on the day without whose support, the competition could not run.

5 skaters competed in the singles free skating with Fiona Brown winning bronze in the beginners masters trophy and Gail Tudor and Lesley Brenikov placing 4th and 5th respectively in the level 1 masters competition, whilst Nicki Torrington won silver at level 2 masters and Rachel Jarvis won the first of several medals coming 3rd at level 3-5 masters Lorraine and John Bailey competed their pairs programme for the first time in the 2 person artistic, as did a number of other ‘pairs’, since the new NISA pairs rules do not allow them to compete in pairs at their free skating standard. They came 5th, skating to Phantom of the Opera and were relieved when it was over but enjoyed the experience and had fun which was their objective. The ‘Bracknell Team’ led by Lesley Brenikov won gold in the small group artistic for 3-7 skaters. Although there were only two entries this year, the standard was very high with the other team from Gosport having won the event almost every year to date but the originality of the Bracknell entry to ‘Swinging on a Star’, won out by the narrowest of margins, much to the delight of the team, comprising of Val Toeman, Nicki Torrington, Sue Truby, Gail Tudor, Pat Watson, Lesley and her daughter, Rebecca Brenikov, who stepped in at the last moment to replace Judy Jurasek who unfortunately had to withdraw for family reasons. Gail then came 4th of 5 in the level 1 Improvisation competition where the skaters hear the music for just 15 minutes and then have to make up a programme to perform, with restricted elements. Rachel placed 4th of 7 in the level 2 and over improvisation against some skaters still in their teens. Rachel was the only Bracknell skater to compete in both free and dance and had a very successful dance day. She competed in 3 competitions and won 3 medals, Gold in the level 3 and under variation, silver in the under level 5 compulsories and bronze in the under level 5 free dance. Viv Coene also competed in 3 classes and won bronze in the level 3 variation and was 7th of 14 in the under level 5 CD and 10th of 14 in the under level 7 FD. Rachel also entered the drawn partners fun competition but having almost never skated with a partner before, she was sadly, knocked out in the first round. Results

Newcomer Delaney Allan finished 4th of 18 in the Level 3 girls competition. She also competed at Basingstoke last week. These were her first competitions since she moved to England last July from Baltimore, Maryland. BISC NEWS TEAM APPOINTED

As announced in the last issue of BISC news Scott Waller who has edited the newsletter for nearly eight years has stood down to have more time, together with her new business partner Laurenne Dorgan, to devote to launching a new national magazine later this summer called iSKATE. The club and its members would like to take this opportunity to thank Scott most sincerely for all her hard work on behalf of the club and wish her and Laurenne every success with their exciting new project. Three club members; Gail Tudor, Jane Jordan and Lesley Brenikov working as a news team, have volunteered to take on some of Scott’s previous responsibilities which will include compiling, editing and printing the newsletter, writing weekly press releases for the local newspapers, drawing up flyers and posters and acting as club PRO in dealing with the press and other enquiries.

The news team would be very pleased to receive any information or photographs to be considered for inclusion in the BISC news whether it be about competitions, skate camps, ice shows, or skate merchandise etc.

STOP PRESS

We are proposing a few changes to the distribution of the newsletter including sending it by email possibly as a pdf (portable document format) file which will help reduce the numbers of newsletters we need to print and will hopefully make the newsletter more easily and quickly available to our members. The BISC newsletter is about YOU and we need your help to ensure that our magazine is able to celebrate your success, detail accurate information and is of interest to all our members. To have YOUR say please contact us either personally at the rink, by leaving a note in the publicity section of the club folder kept at reception or by sending an enquiry from the club’s website. www.bracknell-iceskating-club.co.uk
